Is a photographer not always the director?

My previous post was about realism and surrealism, making the decision what to show you viewer.
Let's take this subject a bit further....

With digital photography we got the possibility to shoot frame after frame after frame. Thousands of photos to choose the ONE from. But does this makes photography more pure?
In my opinion not at all... it's still very directed, maybe even more acted then when you only have four shots. More to choose from, more time and easier medium to do some post production.

Though post production is still a kind of 'not' done, well let it put this way: the 'real' photographers around us say you need to just make a good photo, so there is minimal post production afterwards. But isn't that a statement of ignorance. People are scared of new media. Just like some photographers like to stick on their old camera. And to be honest: I am also a bit passionated by the 'old way'. I like the smell, I love the looks and I do like the way you see your photo develop. But then again, I couldn't imagine myself without my digital cam.
For me as an artist it's hard to imagine people think post production is 'not done'. One: within the darkroom we do exactly the same, so what does photoshop make different except for being really handy, because you do not need to print your images or f*ck up your negatives? And two: you can expand you photographs into real artworks, so you can develop yourself as a real artist instead of only capturing one image. There's nothing wrong (in my opinion) to take you photos to a more surreal level and create your own world within them. Since every photo is a directed scenery anyway, why not direct and imagine it even further?
